Smith's Food & Drug opened its new Smith's Marketplace at 560 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson on Saturday, Jan. 24, KSNV News 3 reported. The 129,790-square-foot store cost $23 million and was expected to employ about 200 people, according to KSNV and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. KSNV reported it is the seventh Smith's location in Henderson.

Opening Day

The grand opening began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m., and the doors opened to the public at 8 a.m., according to KSNV. The first 400 customers received a gift bag of Smith's products and a gift card, KSNV reported, matching the plans the company had announced earlier in the week.

The Review-Journal had reported the opening date on Jan. 20, describing the store as long awaited and noting that it had been in development for almost three years. KSNV's Jan. 21 preview reported the same ribbon-cutting plans and the $23 million cost.

In a statement quoted by KSNV before the opening, Smith's president Kenny Kimball said, "We've created a gathering place for the Henderson community." In the same statement, Kimball said the store would offer fresh groceries and a wide range of products, and that the company looked forward to serving Henderson residents and the surrounding area. KSNV's Jan. 21 preview described the location as a busy part of Henderson, and its opening-day report said the store was designed to offer a wide selection of groceries along with customer service.

Where the Store Is

The store took over the former Burlington and Dollar Tree storefronts in the Galleria Commons shopping center, the Review-Journal reported. KSNV placed the site south of Sunset Road, next to Sunset Station.

The outlets counted the store in two ways:

  • KSNV reported it is the seventh Smith's location of any kind in Henderson, the count it used in its opening-day headline.
  • The Review-Journal reported it is the second Smith's Marketplace in Henderson, after the Cadence location, and the third in the Las Vegas area, along with Skye Canyon.

The Review-Journal described the Marketplace format as an expanded, department-store version of a traditional grocery store.

What the Store Includes

Based on the KSNV and Review-Journal reports, the store offers:

  • Fresh produce, local products and organic options
  • A deli with made-to-order salads and sandwiches, plus hot and cold chicken
  • Sushi and fresh seafood
  • Boar's Head meats and Murray's Cheese
  • A Starbucks cafe
  • A full-service floral department and household goods
  • A drive-thru pharmacy
  • Online grocery pickup
  • A Smith's fuel center

KSNV also reported that the store uses digital shelf tags for pricing. KSNV's preview described the fuel center as five dispensing stations offering five types of fuel, including unleaded regular gasoline and diesel, and the Review-Journal listed the five options as regular, midgrade, premium, diesel and ethanol-free.

What This Means for Owners and Renters

For owners: The store filled former Burlington and Dollar Tree space in an existing shopping center on North Stephanie Street, near Sunset Road. KSNV and the Review-Journal reported a $23 million project with about 200 jobs, and the Review-Journal reported the project took almost three years from start to opening.

For renters: The area around Sunset Road and North Stephanie Street gained a full grocery store with a drive-thru pharmacy, a fuel center and online grocery pickup, according to the two outlets. The store joined the Cadence and Skye Canyon locations as one of three Smith's Marketplace stores in the Las Vegas area, the Review-Journal reported. KSNV's preview listed specialty departments, household goods and a Starbucks cafe among the services planned for opening day.
